| Two names the same meaning: First class tourism with
a 160 year old tradition. The geographical Opatija,
the tourist Opatija, actually covers the entire area
of the Opatija Riviera and its hinterland Liburnia,
a region still called by that name, after the Liburns,
an Illyrian tribe that lived here since prehistoric
times. This area of approximately 310 square kilometres
is a location where two different climates and geophysical
regions merge: the coastal belt from the inlet of Preluk
to the settlement known as Zagorje, and its "continental"
part, conditionally called the karst belt of Opatija.
These two regions are both joined and separated by the
Učka Mountain. With its peak height of 1402 metres it
hover over all of Istria and the Kvarner Bay. The climatic
distinctions of the Opatija Riviera can be felt by visitors
already after a fifteen minute drive in a car. Within
one and same hour the most daring can go swimming in
the sea and sled riding on the slopes of Mt. Učka! The
Opatija Riviera may be grateful for these blessed contrasts
due to its location on the sea coast at a point where
the Adriatic Sea has penetrated most deeply into the
European continent. |
