Flora and parks

The main park in Opatija represents a horticultural monument. It covers an area of 9,1 acres and is divided into 60 sections with 150 different varieties of plants. Most of them were imported from various parts of the world and are not typical for this area. It is recorded in the history books that the early park was established round villa "Angiolina" in the period between 1845 and 1860.
The owner of the villa was Ignio Scarpa, who was famous for his love of nature. Many plants brought from Japan, China, South America, Australia and various other parts around the globe can be found in this park. Japanese camellia (Camellia japonica) is considered the most significant one, since it gradually became Opatija's symbol.

After Scarpa's death the property changed its owners several times until 1882, when it became the property of "The South Railways Company". While the company was establishing Opatija as a winter seaside health resort, the park was reorganized and many new sections were added. Carl Schubert, the head of the Viennese Royal Society for Park Preservations, lead the reconstruction and the expansion of the park. The parts in front of "Villa Angiolina", Hotel Kvarner and Hotel Imperial were subsequently established, in the period between 1883 and 1886.
