Another prank of history with the names of places!
It is almost as if it was
customary among the well known places of Opatija's riviera...
If there was any historical justice, the borough should
have called Mošćenice.
Mošćenice is much older settlement, and the centre of
the borough for proximately the same region since July
13, 1896, to the twenties of this century.
However, here too tourism intruded and decided differently:
in the period between the two world wars, attracted
by most beautiful beach, the guests began to go "down",
to the Draga, whereas "old" Mošćenice were
slowly forgotten, even though the town is to this day
the best preserved urban environment in this part of
Croatia. Mošćenice are mentioned in a testament it written
in German on June 24, 1387, as well as in a document
in Glagolitc script written on November 2, 1395 which
defined the borders Mošćenice and
neighbouring Kožljak. Another older settlement is Brseč,
an ancient Croat fortress located on the plateau of
a steep and not easily accessible rocky cliff that hovers
157 metres above the sea level. Valvasor mentions that
Brseč had quite a few churches and excellent red wine,
so thick that it it was used as food. |
